Kurri Kurri Smelter Site – Planning Proposals on Exhibition (Submissions closed 1 Feb 2021)
Planning proposals to rezone land on the former Kurri Kurri aluminium smelter site have now been placed on exhibition by Cessnock and Maitland City Councils, concurrently. This is likely to see the rezoning of land ready for employment lands, residential areas and eventually a large area (around 1000 hectares) of conservation land.
Hydro has been preparing for this for a long time, and this means that redevelopment work can start to ramp up soon. Once approved, the redevelopment of the site will help to regrow the economy in and around Kurri Kurri, after it was impacted by the closure of the smelter now eight years ago.
The first steps towards residential development are expected to get underway within six months of the rezoning being completed.
